EECP NEW
TREATMENT PROVIDES RELIEF FROM CHEST PAIN WHAT IS EECP? While
most people are familiar with the terms bypass surgery and balloon
angioplasty, not everyone is aware of EECP (Enhanced External Counterpulsation).
Yet, EECP is a safe, well-tolerated treatment option for angina, a term referring
to discomfort in the chest, throat or arms that is due to narrowed or blocked
heart arteries. EECP is currently the only clinically tested and proven noninvasive
outpatient procedure to relieve angina.
HOW IT WORKS The EECP
system includes a series of cuffs around the legs that inflate and deflate in
sync with the heartbeat. When inflated, cuffs push oxygen-rich blood toward the
heart. When cuffs deflate, blood leaves the heart without the organ having to
work as hard. Cardiologists believe that over time, EECP can help tiny blood vessels
carry more blood to the heart muscle, offsetting blocked arteries. Treatments
are for one hour daily for up to seven weeks in a peaceful office setting. No
needles or surgery is needed.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR EECP? You
may be a candidate if you: Have chronic stable angina Have
not received adequate response from angina while on medications Do not
qualify for invasive revascularization procedures-bypass surgery, angioplasty
or stents Have had revascularization procedures without lasting relief
from symptoms
ACTIVE AGAIN EECP can usually reduce or eliminate
the frequency and intensity of chest pain and reduce the need for angina medication.
People who have received EECP Therapy report an overall improvement in the quality
of their lives. West Shore Cardiology is pleased to offer EECP for appropriate
patients. If you believe you may benefit from EECP, call 231-739-9427 for an initial
